[secretmoviemonday] making VCDs

Some people have asked about making VCDs. Here's how you can do it in Windows, --- What are VCDs? Like DVDs, only they don't look as good, and can only fit about 60 minutes of video. All DVD players can also play VCDs. --- Why not DVDs then? Because VCD disks are regular blank CDs which are cheaper. --- How do I make them? Install defilerpak. Then use tmpgenc. Burn the resulting files as a VCD in Nero, or just burn the files and it'll work in most DVD players. --- That's it? Mostly yeah, though there's a few weird file quirks out there that you might want to work around. For quicktime files get the tmpgenc quicktime plugin. Have a current version of quicktime on your system. For files with variable bitrate (VBR) mp3 audio you'll need to extract (demux) the audio and then recompress it at a constant bit rate (CBR). Use gspot to see if it's a VBR. Then use virtualdubmod and click on streams | stream list | to demux the audio. Open the extracted audio in Audacity or something and use Lame to reencode the audio as CBR mp3 at a high bitrate, about 196. Open up virtualdubmod again and click streams | stream list | and double click on the VBR mp3 to disable it. Add your newly created CBR mp3, then hit ok and File | Save As ".avi" and in that dialog make sure the drop down is set to direct stream copy (rather than full processing mode). Now you'll have a video file with audio that tmpgenc likes. If you have CBR mp3 audio that doesn't work, it's likely corrupt, so recompress it as another CBR and replace the audio like above. For .ogm files use virtualdubmod, demux the Ogg Vorbis audio and convert it to a CBR mp3. Include the CBR, exclude the Vorbis, Save As ".avi", and then use tmpgenc. -- .Matthew Cruickshank http://holloway.co.nz/
